One-on-One Coaching for Optimal Results

Most high-performance enterprises run at a pace that leaves little time for individual coaching. Other than scheduled offsites and informal, after-hours conversations, most executive interactions focus on immediate operational issues and performance measurement. Few senior executives have the time or experience to mentor their peers or subordinates. While internal and external training courses provide value, senior professionals, especially those in fast-growth organizations or in steep-learning-curve jobs, need and want high-octane coaching.

The OnCourse Associates are seasoned professional advisors. Many of us have run our own high-growth businesses. We know it’s challenging both to be a focused professional and to have a satisfying life outside the office. We are committed to helping you and your team realize your aspirations – both vocational and personal. We form a partnership in which you determine the destination. As your coach, our job is to create the roadmap with you, and then guide you on the journey. Guidance includes both encouragement and challenge. OnCourse Coaching provides an intentional pause – the chance to stop, look around, and take stock. The result: You’ll gain clarity, understand problems at their core, assess areas of struggle, and shift into productive patterns.

OnCourse coaching is confidential between the advisor and the professional. We jointly set the goals, frequency, and content of the sessions. Most coaching relationships begin with a half-day introductory session (background sharing, key issue identification, initial goal setting). Ongoing, scheduled sessions are typically biweekly or monthly for an hour, conducted either in person or by phone. And you may call or email us 24/7 for guidance on pressing issues or crises. Many of our clients live on different continents, and we meet face-to-face only at the initial session. All other interaction is by phone, videoconference, and email. After a few months, we jointly reevaluate the coaching process and adjust timing and frequency to meet your needs.

Coaching sessions have no content limits. Areas for exploration include:

Executive and Leadership Growth

  • Creating trust, safety, and openness within your team
  • Uncovering and dealing with conflict and “bad news”
  • Improving listening skills and eliminating listening filters
  • Empowering every member of your team
  • Making clean agreements and handling broken ones
  • How to offer and receive feedback for improved performance
  • How to present difficult information without losing cooperation
  • When and how to express appreciation or praise
  • How to sense and deal with emotions in others
  • How to spark creativity within your team
  • How to say no without alienating others
  • How to manage by instrument panel and increase productivity

Whole-Life Growth

  • Eliminating blame and taking 100% responsibility for whatever is going on in your life
  • Complete candor in all areas of your life
  • Addressing conflict or tension in your key life relationships (e.g., boss, spouse, parents, children)
  • Balance among work, home, and personal life
  • Clarity on your “signature strengths”; the characteristics of an environment where you will thrive
  • Crafting a personal mission statement
  • Identifying your rolling 12-month personal goals and action plans
  • Understanding how you set “upper limits” on your life (where you don’t let it get “too good”)
  • Identifying ways you sabotage relationships and growth – and moving beyond them

After 22 years of working in and running my family’s business, I was worn out. Our top line was growing, but our bottom line wasn’t. We were making mistakes and I was frustrated. Jim challenged me to re-focus my efforts from working in my business to working on my business, and the change has been dramatic. His ability to probe and ask the right questions inspired me to adopt a focus on our company culture that has been transformational for me and our team members. He has changed my life.
